You can connect to MyFreeWirelessISP.com using a USB cable and or a Bluetooth DUN( Dial Up Networking) Capable cell phone, along with a supporting computer. Depending on the cellphone, service provider, and computer operating system the method of making this connection will differ. I will provide you with some general instructions for some of the more common cellphones and computer operating systems.

Regardless of the cellphone or laptop you have there are certain key items and features that will be required. Rather then jump right in lets start with a check list of items you will need before we begin.

  • Cell phone capable of providing Dial Up Networking through USB and or Bluetooth
  • A USB cable that will fit into your cellphone and a computer with a free USB port. If your computer and phone have Bluetooth you could always just use that instead of the cable. *NOTE: Bluetooth all though more convenient will rapidly deplete your battery especially if you are connected without it charging.
  • You will need to jot down one of the Service Area Numbers from our website and register for a username and password.

Pairing your Cellphone as a Modem on Windows XP

In Windows XP SP2, you can add a cellphone Bluetooth device that has support for dial-up networking as a modem. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type telephon.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. On the Modems tab, click Add. "The Select Bluetooth Device" dialog box opens.
  3. Click to select a Bluetooth device to use as a modem. *NOTE: If the bluetooth device wasn't already added you will need to do that now.

If you configure Windows to detect modems while a Bluetooth adapter is connected, Windows automatically opens "Select Bluetooth Device" when it detects a Bluetooth device, that has support for dial-up networking(DUN).

Notes on modem support

  • Windows XP automatically generates a passkey for the connection between the mobile phone and your computer. You can use this passkey or enter one of your own. Passkeys can have up to 16 characters. The passkey must be entered within 30 seconds, or authentication may not succeed.
  • Some mobile phones already have a passkey. If your phone has a passkey, enter the passkey in the Bluetooth Connection Wizard.
  • Bluetooth is not a secure wireless technology. Your data may be visible to other devices or computers that are in range.
  • If your mobile phone does not support dial-up networking, you cannot install the phone by using the Add Hardware Wizard. To install the phone, use Bluetooth Devices.
  • When a mobile phone is connected as a modem, it appears in Device Manager as a modem.

Tethering your Cellphone as a Modem on XP/Vista/windows 7 Using a USB cable

USB is much more difficult to set up on windows only because of the lack of drivers needed to allow windows to recognize your phone. I encourage you to use Bluetooth and just plug your phone into the wall for power, Of course if your phone doesn't support Bluetooth DUN. Then USB tethering is your only option. With that said I will provide a few helpful links, that will help you get your cellphone recognized when you plug it in.

Once your cellphone is plugged in and recognized the rest of the steps are the same as for Bluetooth which I will paste here again.
